Youths confront MP over project delays with toy guns amid police warnings and arrest.
Dr. Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for the Nhyiaeso Constituency and Deputy Finance Minister, reportedly displayed a firearm in self-defense during a confrontation with constituents at Atasemanso. The incident occurred after some youth allegedly threatened him with a toy gun while seeking updates on the completion of an Astroturf pitch in the area.
According to Luv FM sources, a group of constituents, including supporters of the MP’s party, gathered at his campaign grounds armed with toy guns. The youth fired the toy guns into the air amidst cheers before confronting Dr. Amoah to demand details on the state of the Astroturf project.
Jimmy Boakye Ansah, the spokesperson for the NPP in the Nhyiaeso Constituency, confirmed the encounter and defended the MP’s actions.
“The MP was caught unawares. They had a good discussion with him, and he gave them some money. The one who pulled the toy gun did it on the blind side of Dr. Amoah,” he explained.
The incident has spotlighted a growing trend in Kumasi, where youth are known to display and fire toy guns for recreation. This practice has raised concerns among authorities.
The Ghana Police Service has issued a statement warning the public, particularly the youth, against the misuse of toy guns. The statement highlighted the legal implications, stating, “This act constitutes the offence of offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace contrary to section 207 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), amongst others.”
This warning follows the arrest of 26 individuals for indiscriminately displaying and firing toy guns in public spaces.
