UG postpones 2024/2025 academic year amidst staff strike

The University of Ghana has decided to postpone the commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year due to an ongoing strike by various tertiary employee unions. This decision, confirmed through a statement from the Office of the Registrar on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, has significant implications for students, faculty, and all stakeholders involved in the academic community.

The delay in starting the academic year is a direct result of the unresolved disputes between the government and key unions, such as the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG). These unions have been engaged in an indefinite strike to address longstanding issues related to their working conditions.

The concerns raised by these unions are varied and impactful. They include grievances about delayed pension contributions, non-payment of vehicle maintenance allowances, and the suspension of certain previously agreed allowances. These disputes have created a challenging environment for the university to operate smoothly and have led to the postponement of the academic year’s start.

Despite these challenges, the university is committed to ensuring that special programs continue as scheduled to minimize the disruption caused by the strike.Moving forward, the university plans to communicate a new start date for the general academic year once the situation stabilizes.
