Sonnie Badu advocates for Spirit-filled yet commercially viable gospel music
Renowned gospel musician Sonnie Badu has encouraged gospel artistes to strike a balance between spirituality and commercialization in their music. While acknowledging the importance of financial rewards, he emphasized that spiritual elements should not be overlooked.
“The spirit-filled could be commercialized and it’s rightly so and good to do that. That’s how you benefit from your gift and craft. You need that balance there, don’t be totally commercialized to forget about the spirituality, you have to blend the two,” he stated during an interview on Star FM on November 13, 2024.
Sonnie Badu further explained that while uploading songs on digital platforms involves costs, it is essential for gospel artistes to reap financial benefits from their craft. “I think there is the now realization that the spirit-filled gospel music can be commercialized. Anybody who puts their song on a digital platform is not doing it for free. If you are super spirit-filled you end up regretting not doing what you could have done when you had the opportunity to,” he added.
The celebrated musician also announced his upcoming “Afro Monty” concert in partnership with Silicon House, scheduled to take place at Independence Square on November 29. He invited Ghanaians to attend the free event for what he described as an extraordinary experience.
Sonnie Badu’s insights underline the importance of balancing ministry and business in gospel music while encouraging artistes to maximize their potential and opportunities.
