Simi advocates for women’s economic power, urges parents to raise independent daughters
Nigerian musician and songwriter, Simi, has once again voiced her thoughts on the importance of women being financially independent. Known for using her platform to promote social change and advocate for equality, Simi emphasized that financial independence could be a transformative tool for women, enabling them to live more confident, secure lives.
In a recent TikTok video, the talented artist urged parents to actively encourage their children, especially daughters, to value independence from a young age. She stressed that financial autonomy empowers women to shape their own futures and resist becoming reliant on others for survival or success.
“Please do not raise your daughters to think that when they grow up, all they have to do is rely on someone that they don’t have to take care of themselves,” Simi said, addressing the generational norms that sometimes place women in dependent roles.
She added, “When someone is spoiling you, it shouldn’t be because you cannot spoil yourself. As they are spoiling you, you too are spoiling them, and let them know that you’re standing strong.”
Simi also highlighted the deep sense of security that financial independence provides for women, underscoring how it can serve as a protective measure in an often unequal world.
“There is security in knowing that you have got yourself. A woman’s economic power is in protecting herself, fending for herself, and being able to confidently acknowledge that she is a complete person. You deserve good things; you need to occupy space,” she continued.
Reflecting on her own life, Simi admitted that she was speaking from a place of privilege, having had a supportive upbringing that encouraged her growth and success.
“I admit that I say this from a place of privilege. I grew up among people who believed in me, pushed me and encouraged me. I had chances that took me from here to here but some women had to work with less,” she said.
She then appealed to society at large to recognize and support women who are not as fortunate and have fewer opportunities to thrive. “Less love, less faith, less kindness and opportunities, and that’s where we as a society have to step in and when you are in a position to give a deserving woman an opportunity, please give it to her,” Simi urged.
