Sammy Gyamfi of NDC alleges NPP of employing security agent to influence December 1 polls
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate removal of Brigadier General Michael Opoku, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, citing a “notorious” track record unfit for his position. Addressing the press on Tuesday, November 19, NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi described Brigadier General Opoku as a “miscreant” with a history of supervising violence, notably during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
Sammy Gyamfi alleged that Brigadier General Opoku has been strategically placed by President Akufo-Addo to execute an election-rigging scheme favoring the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region. According to the NDC, the officer has been promised the role of Chief of Defence Staff should the NPP secure victory in the 2024 elections. “In his current position, Brigadier General Michael Opoku has been mandated by Akufo-Addo to execute a well-crafted scheme designed by the NPP to rig the upcoming elections,” Gyamfi claimed.
The NDC further alleged that Brigadier General Opoku is training ruffians disguised as military personnel at the Asutsuare military camp. Gyamfi claimed these individuals would be deployed to intimidate NDC supporters and disrupt the elections. “Brigadier General Opoku plans to clothe these bandits in military apparel to unleash violence on NDC agents, supporters, and innocent civilians on Election Day,” he stated.
The party also urged the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to investigate these allegations and ensure no individual seizes their authority. The NDC vowed to hold Ghana’s security heads accountable for any election-related violence, emphasizing, “Elections are about counting heads and not cutting heads.”
Gyamfi issued a strong warning to Brigadier General Opoku and his alleged collaborators, declaring, “This time around, violence cannot and will not win the NPP this year’s election.”
