Pep Guardiola commits to Man City until 2027 after four straight defeats
Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has committed to the club by signing a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the helm until 2027. The decision comes amid a challenging period for the Spaniard, as City recently suffered four consecutive defeats for the first time in his managerial career.
Guardiola, who joined City in 2016, has overseen an era of remarkable success, winning 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles. Despite his contract being set to expire at the end of the current season, he chose to extend his stay after recent losses to Tottenham, Brighton, Sporting, and Bournemouth.
“I felt I could not leave now. Maybe the four defeats was why,” Guardiola told the club’s website. “I think we deserve, after four defeats in a row, to bounce back and try to turn the situation. I think we deserve to be here. I am not arrogant to say, but it’s the truth.”
Guardiola emphasized his determination to help City recover their stability and consistency, which have been hallmarks of their success. “We have to recover that because right now we don’t have it, and that’s the target we have to do,” he added.
Despite the recent setbacks, Guardiola reflected on his deep connection to the club, where he has spent nine seasons. “Being in charge of City means so much to me. I have everything a manager could ever wish for,” he said. “We have experienced so many amazing times together. Hopefully, now we can add more trophies to the ones we have already won. That will be my focus.”
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak praised Guardiola’s decision to stay. “Like every City fan, I am delighted that Pep’s journey with Manchester City will continue, allowing his dedication, passion, and innovative thinking to shape the landscape of the game,” he said. “His hunger for improvement and success remains insatiable.”
Guardiola’s tenure has been marked by historic achievements, including leading City to become the second English men’s team to win the Treble and the first to achieve 100 Premier League points in a single campaign.
City currently sit second in the Premier League, five points behind leaders Liverpool, with two of their four recent defeats coming in the league.
As the longest-serving manager in the Premier League following Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Liverpool in the summer, Guardiola remains focused on leading City to further success.
