NPP: NDC plans to use “Eagle Force vigilante group” to disrupt voting in their strongholds

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating plans to disrupt the December elections. This allegation was made by the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, also known as Nana B, during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, November 20.

“Information available to the NPP reveals that several months ago, the NDC has been training thugs in various communities, including Obuasi East constituency, under the guise of private security training. These individuals are being prepared to disturb the electoral process, particularly in the Ashanti region, which is the NPP’s stronghold,” Nana B alleged.

He further claimed that the NDC has been supporting illegal miners to stir chaos during the elections. Nana B cited a secret meeting allegedly held by the NDC’s committee on mining, led by Tony Aubynn, a former CEO of the Minerals Commission. According to him, the meeting, held at the Mawuli Hotel in the Obuasi West municipality, aimed to recruit pro-NDC small-scale miners to join the NDC’s Eagle Force vigilante group. These individuals, he claimed, are being positioned to disrupt NPP polling stations on election day.

In addition to these allegations, Nana B accused the NDC of arming these recruits and using state ambulances to transport weapons to various communities. He further alleged that the NDC intends to fuel incidents of kidnapping and armed robbery to create fear and panic in NPP strongholds.

“These deceitful strategies will not work under our watch,” Nana B stated, asserting the NPP’s commitment to ensuring a fair and peaceful election.

The NPP’s press conference was in response to allegations made by the NDC during its own press briefing on Tuesday. At that event, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communication Officer, announced plans to petition the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over concerns about an alleged plot to manipulate the election results.

The NDC had accused the government of planning to rig the election in the Ashanti Region, citing the involvement of a senior military officer within the Ghana Armed Forces’ Central Command. They further claimed this officer had been rewarded with a promotion despite recommendations for disciplinary action following the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence.
