“…no political ambition Is worth innocent blood” – WAEF on Ghana’s elections in a commendation statement
The West African Elders Forum (WAEF) has commended Ghana for its steadfast commitment to democracy, peace, and stability, reaffirming its position as a lighthouse of democratic governance in the region.
In a statement issued after the successful conduct of the December 7, 2024, presidential and parliamentary elections, WAEF praised the peaceful and transparent nature of the electoral process. The forum applauded Ghanaians for their orderly participation, which it said reflects the nation’s dedication to democratic principles.
The forum also expressed appreciation for outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, highlighting his leadership during the electoral period and his role in ensuring that election observers operated in an enabling environment.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was similarly applauded for his statesmanship in acknowledging defeat even before the official declaration of results. WAEF described his gesture as a sign of patriotism and a strong commitment to Ghana’s democratic progress.
Acknowledging the professionalism of the Electoral Commission (EC), the joint security task force, political parties, and civil society organizations, WAEF credited their vigilance for safeguarding the integrity of the elections.
However, the forum expressed regret over violent incidents that marred the electoral process, including the loss of lives, injuries to voters, and the destruction of electoral materials, such as the burning of the EC’s office in the Domingo District of the Savannah Region.
“Elections must never be treated as a war or a ‘do-or-die’ affair. They are avenues for citizens to peacefully express their will and determine their collective future. No political ambition is worth the blood of innocent citizens. Violence undermines democracy and erodes the peace and stability Ghana is known for,” WAEF emphasized.
The forum urged political leaders to restrain their supporters, promote dialogue, and use lawful channels to resolve grievances. It also called on security agencies to swiftly investigate the violent incidents, hold perpetrators accountable, and ensure the safety of citizens and electoral materials.
