Made in Ghana movement goes global: Okyeame Kwame at earthshot prize
Ghanaian musician and ‘Made in Ghana’ ambassador Okyeame Kwame made a striking cultural statement at the 2024 Earthshot Prize ceremony, held on November 6 in Cape Town, South Africa. The artist attended the prestigious event dressed in resplendent Ghanaian kente, representing his heritage with pride.
In a Facebook post, Okyeame Kwame shared his experience, including a memorable moment with Prince William of Wales. “Standing Next to Prince William of Wales, I was honored. When I was invited to the #EarthshotPrize awards, I came to ask you, my wise counsel, whether I should wear a suit or represent as an African prince. 90% of you suggested I wear my kente. So you I listened to advice and threw on my Bonwire kente. In fact, everybody wanted to take a picture with me. I have come to say thank you for advising me that #madeinghana is the way,” he wrote. He also expressed gratitude to the Earthshot Prize organizers, MultiChoice Group, and the Prince and Princess of Wales for the invitation.
The Earthshot Prize, first awarded in 2021, celebrates innovative solutions to climate and environmental challenges. The 2024 awards ceremony was hosted by Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winner Billy Porter and acclaimed television presenter Bonang Matheba.
Inspired by US ex President John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot project, the Earthshot Prize aims to encourage groundbreaking efforts to protect and restore the planet. Winners were announced at the star-studded event, which brought together global leaders, innovators, and changemakers in Cape Town.
Okyeame Kwame’s bold fashion choice highlighted the importance of embracing cultural identity on global platforms, earning praise for showcasing the beauty and richness of Ghanaian heritage.
