Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan success earns him CAF Coach of the Year Nomination
Kwesi Appiah has been nominated for the prestigious 2024 CAF Awards Coach of the Year, honoring his impressive accomplishments as head coach of the Sudan national team.
Appiah, a former Ghana international, took charge of the Sudanese side last year, navigating the team through the country’s challenging conditions and proving his skill and resilience. Since assuming the role, he has led the Falcons of Jediane through 12 matches, securing 7 wins, 4 draws, and only 1 loss.
Under Appiah’s guidance, Sudan is now on the verge of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following a decisive 2-0 win over Ghana in Libya. This victory came after a goalless draw in the first leg held at the Accra Sports Stadium, placing Sudan in a favorable position to progress.
Sudan currently holds second place in Group F, with seven points, three points behind group leaders Angola. With just two matches remaining, they need only a draw to secure their AFCON qualification. Appiah’s influence is also evident in Sudan’s World Cup campaign, as the team leads Group B of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with ten points, maintaining a two-point edge over Senegal after four games.
Appiah’s journey to this nomination is remarkable, and he will be competing for the Coach of the Year award against high-profile figures like Emerse Fae, Hugo Broos, Pedro Gonçalves, and Jose Gomes.
The CAF Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in mid-December in Morocco, where the continent will celebrate the achievements of its top football talents.
