Guru emerges winner in the UG’s SRC Presidential Race.
Ghanaian musician, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, known by his stage name Guru, emerged victorious in the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election held at the prestigious University of Ghana. The electoral process was not without its share of challenges, as weeks of intense campaigning were marred by disqualifications, legal disputes, and various obstacles. Despite these hurdles, Guru, along with his running mate, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, managed to secure a significant 50.7% of the votes, totaling an impressive 9,455 ballots cast. The high voter turnout of 18,659 reflected the keen interest and engagement of the student body in the electoral process.
The road to victory was not smooth for Guru, as he faced initial disqualification based on his non-resident student status. However, after a rigorous legal battle, the Appeals Board overturned the disqualification, allowing Guru and his counterpart to participate in the election. This decision was met with approval from the Vice Dean, who instructed the inclusion of their names in the list of presidential candidates. Subsequently, the school’s Electoral Commission was directed to facilitate the balloting process for all vetted candidates.
On the day of the polls, Guru and his running mate emerged triumphant, securing their position as the leaders of the SRC for the forthcoming academic year. Their victory with 50.7% of the votes not only signifies widespread student support but also sets the stage for a promising administration. As Guru prepares to take on the responsibilities of the SRC presidency, the university community eagerly anticipates the positive changes and initiatives that his leadership will bring in the 2024/25 academic year.
