Government to build 609 new homes for civil servants nationwide – Ministry of Works and Housing

The Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has unveiled the government’s initiative to construct 609 new residences for civil servants nationwide in Ghana, meticulously tailored to cater to their distinct housing requirements. During a media briefing in Accra on Monday, September 30, 2024, the Minister emphasized that this endeavor underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the living standards of public sector employees by affording them secure and appropriate housing facilities.

“These housing units form part of our broader strategy to tackle Ghana’s housing deficit, currently estimated at 1.8 million units. Providing decent housing for our public servants not only elevates their standard of living but also enables them to serve the nation more effectively,” he said.

The housing project will be executed under the District Housing Programme, which is specifically tailored to address the housing needs of indispensable public servants including educators, healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers, and others, particularly those stationed in remote and underserved regions.

“Our public servants deserve high-quality housing that supports both their professional and personal lives. These new units will be spread across various districts, ensuring accessibility even in rural areas.”

Mr. Nkrumah also provided updates on endeavors to revive dormant housing schemes nationwide. He verified that the Koforidua Affordable Housing Project, which had been halted, will recommence construction under the sponsership of the State Housing Company Limited.

Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the government’s collaboration with the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) to secure sustainable financial frameworks for housing ventures.

“The GIIF will be crucial in developing innovative funding solutions to help bridge the housing deficit,”he affirmed.
