Ghana sets stage for peaceful power handover as Mahama and Akufo-Addo collaborate
President-elect John Dramani Mahama and outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo are set to inaugurate a joint transition team on December 11, 2024, as part of efforts to ensure a smooth transfer of power. This collaborative initiative highlights Ghana’s strong democratic foundation and commitment to unity during leadership transitions.
In his first address after being officially declared the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election by the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr. Mahama announced the decision to expedite the transition process. He confirmed receiving a congratulatory call from President Akufo-Addo, during which they discussed plans for the transition.
“I have also just received a call from His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo. He graciously extended his congratulations to me, and we had the opportunity to discuss matters related to the joint transition team. We have agreed on an early inauguration of the joint transition team as early as Wednesday, 11th December,” Mr. Mahama stated during his victory speech.
He also expressed his readiness to collaborate with the outgoing administration, emphasizing the need to prioritize the nation’s welfare during the transition. “I conveyed my sincerest regards to him and expressed my readiness for us to work together to ensure a smooth transition in the best interest of the Ghanaian people,” he added.
The transition team will oversee the handover process, ensuring that the incoming government is fully prepared to assume office. The early inauguration, just days after the declaration of results, reflects the determination of both leaders to uphold Ghana’s reputation for peaceful democratic transitions.
President Nana Akufo-Addo also released a statement congratulating Mr. Mahama on his victory and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a seamless transfer of power on January 7, 2025.
“I look forward to working with the President-elect and his team to realize this goal,” President Akufo-Addo stated. He commended the Electoral Commission, led by Jean Mensa, for its role in conducting the elections, and applauded Ghanaians for their active participation in the democratic process. “This successful election reflects the enduring strength of Ghana’s democracy,” he noted.
This proactive and cooperative approach to the transition underscores the nation’s ongoing commitment to stability and democratic progress, further cementing Ghana’s position as a model of effective governance on the continent.
