Ghana ranked 7th globally in World Bank funding beneficiaries
Ghana is ranked as the 7th largest recipient of World Bank funding globally, having received a total of $11.2 billion in International Development Association (IDA) funding between 1961 and 2024.
Leading the global list of beneficiaries are Ethiopia with $23.4 billion, Nigeria with $18.8 billion, and Vietnam with $18.5 billion. Ghana is followed closely by China, which is ranked 8th with $10.2 billion in IDA funding.
Eight of the top 10 recipient countries are from Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the region’s significant reliance on IDA resources.
Since its establishment in 1960, the IDA— the concessional financing arm of the World Bank—has provided over $287 billion to support development in the world’s poorest nations, with a focus on reaching underserved and remote areas.
Africa accounts for approximately 73% of IDA’s total payments, receiving $210 billion over the program’s lifetime. East Asia is the second-largest beneficiary region, receiving $41.8 billion (14.5%), followed by Europe and Central Asia with $17.5 billion (6.1%), and Latin America and the Caribbean with $11.2 billion (3.9%).
The Middle East received the least funding, accounting for $7.1 billion or 2.5% of the total.
