From Black Stars to Sudan: Kwesi Appiah’s impactful coaching legacy continues, his assistant coach hails.
Sudan’s assistant national football coach, Ignatius Osei Fosu, has hailed Kwesi Appiah as the best coach to manage Ghana’s Black Stars in the last decade. Appiah, who last coached the Black Stars in 2019, led the team to the Round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt before his tenure ended under the Kurt Okraku-led administration.
Despite his departure, Appiah’s coaching excellence remains evident, as he recently guided Sudan to qualify for the 2025 AFCON — the country’s first qualification since 2012.
Speaking in an interview on MAX TV, Osei Fosu praised the 66-year-old coach for his exceptional leadership and influence. “Kwesi Appiah is the best coach in the last 10 years to have handled the Black Stars,” he said.
Under Appiah’s stewardship, Sudan currently tops Group B in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with 10 points from four matches, showcasing their strong form. The Falcons of Jediane are set to face Senegal and South Sudan in March 2025 as they aim to solidify their position.
Appiah’s tenure with the Black Stars saw him secure 27 wins in 54 competitive matches, leaving an enduring legacy in African football.
