Former beauty queen Akua GMB shares regrets on her early marriage
Sally Akua Amoakowaa, popularly known as Akua GMB and a former contestant on TV3’s Ghana’s Most Beautiful, recently opened up about her regrets regarding her decision to marry at a young age. Speaking in an interview, she shared that if given the chance to go back, she would not have married at 22.
Reflecting on her life choices, the former beauty queen explained that marrying young had prevented her from fully experiencing life and understanding herself. “If I had had the opportunity to change something in my life ten years ago, I think it would have been me not getting married. I sometimes feel I got married too early. I got married at the age of 22,” she revealed.
She continued, “Then, I hadn’t discovered who I was. I hadn’t explored the world, and I didn’t know me. So, that decision, I think, wasn’t a good one for me.”
Despite her own experience, the CEO of Jewel Fashion clarified that she does not discourage young women from marrying early, as long as they genuinely understand themselves and are prepared for the responsibilities of marriage. “If the person thinks she knows who she is, she understands what she is getting herself into, she is ready for the task ahead, of course, why not? You can go ahead and get married,” she advised.
Akua GMB, who married Dr. Kweku Oteng shortly after winning the 2011 Ghana’s Most Beautiful pageant, was his fourth wife. The couple was married for nearly eight years, from 2011 until their divorce in 2019, and they have three children together.
