Curfew imposed on Sampa township as Bono Region faces rising tensions

The Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, has imposed a curfew on Sampa Township in the Jaman North District of Ghana’s Bono Region, effective immediately through an Executive Instrument.

According to an official statement from the Interior Ministry, this curfew will run daily from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., starting Thursday, October 24, 2024, and will remain in place until further notice. This measure comes in response to a recommendation from the Bono Regional Security Council, citing concerns about ongoing chieftaincy disputes that have stirred unrest within the township.

“The government urges Chiefs, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and Residents of the area to remain calm amid these challenges and to seek peaceful, non-violent means to address their concerns,” the statement emphasized. Authorities hope this move will de-escalate tensions and create a safer environment for all residents.

Additionally, the Ministry’s statement declared a complete ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons within the boundaries of Sampa Township. This ban aims to prevent potential violence and restore order as the community navigates these complex issues.

The Interior Ministry further stated that anyone found with arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons will face arrest and prosecution. Security forces have been placed on high alert to ensure compliance and protect public safety during this sensitive period.
