Couple alleges foul play in death of triplets at Korle-Bu Hospital, demands investigation
A couple residing in Mallam Kokroko, situated in the Weija Gbawe Municipality within the Greater Accra Region, has raised serious allegations against the healthcare professionals at Akawe Government Hospital and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The couple, Hilda Ninson and her husband, experienced a harrowing ordeal surrounding the birth of their triplets. Hilda gave birth prematurely to her three babies on August 3, 2024, at Akawe Government Hospital. Due to the hospital’s shortage of incubators, the medical staff, under the supervision of a nurse known as Auntie Mercy, arranged for the transfer of the triplets to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital the following day.
Upon arrival at Korle-Bu, a series of distressing events unfolded. Hilda’s husband was sent on errands by the hospital staff, leaving Hilda vulnerable and anxious. Shockingly, he was informed that one of the newborns had tragically passed away in his absence. The situation took a darker turn when he returned and noticed differences in the appearance of the deceased baby compared to the surviving ones. The anguish deepened as, within hours, another baby was reported dead, followed by the devastating news of the third triplet’s demise on August 5, 2024.
The grieving parents, especially Hilda, are convinced that there was foul play involved in the deaths of their babies. They recall unsettling conversations with healthcare providers, including a Social Welfare worker at Akawe Hospital who disturbingly suggested giving one of the babies away. Furthermore, Patrick Gyasi, the father, overheard conversations hinting at the possibility of selling the babies due to the family’s financial constraints.
As the couple seeks answers and justice, the management of Akawe Government Hospital has confirmed the birth of the triplets at their facility and the subsequent transfer to Korle-Bu due to equipment limitations. However, the specifics of what transpired at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital remain shrouded in mystery, prompting calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic loss of the newborn triplets.
