Chief of Buduburam calls for calm after fatal rock-blasting incident
Nana Kojo Essel, the chief of Buduburam, has appealed to residents to remain calm following a tragic rock-blasting accident that claimed three lives and injured several others. The chief urged the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands as investigations into the incident have commenced.
There have been reports of planned retaiation attacks against the contractor responsible for the rock blasting, but Nana Essel cautioned against such actions. He stressed that allowing the law to take its course is the best way to ensure justice for the victims.
Speaking to his people on Tuesday, Nana Essel assured the residents that efforts were being made to secure compensation for all those affected by the disaster. He emphasized the importance of allowing the contractor to continue the project while investigations are ongoing. He also advised against politicizing the issue, warning that it could hinder the justice and compensation that the victims deserve.
The accident occurred on Monday afternoon during a rock-blasting operation along the Buduburam section of the Accra-Winneba highway. The blast was part of a construction project being carried out by Nag Fairmont.
In the aftermath of the incident, several government officials, including Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, Central Regional Minister, Marigold Assan, and other dignitaries, visited the area to offer their condolences and support. During the visit, the Omankrado of Gomoa Fetteh, Nana Kwesi Quansah (also known as Akwesi Alhaji), echoed the call for calm. He promised that the traditional authorities would work closely with the government and the contractor to ensure proper compensation for the victims.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Gomoa East, Solomon Darko Quarm, also urged residents not to resort to any violent actions that could cause further damage.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident. The Ministry is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to ascertain the exact number of casualties and ensure that the injured receive the necessary medical care.
