Ashanti Kingdom marks 100 years of King Prempeh I’s return from exile

The Manhyia Palace has announced an extraordinary celebration to mark 100 years since the return of King Prempeh I from exile in Seychelles. This milestone event, rich in cultural and historical significance, was revealed in a press release by Lawrence Prempeh, the Deputy Chief of Staff at the Palace.

The highlight of the celebrations will unfold this weekend, attracting dignitaries and royals from across the globe. Among the honored guests are the President of Seychelles, the Prime Minister of Eswatini, and President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The festivities will begin on Saturday with a grand durbar of chiefs at the Manhyia Palace. This event will formally welcome the President of Seychelles and showcase the cultural vibrancy and unity of the Ashanti Kingdom, with traditional leaders from the Ashanti Region and beyond in attendance.

On Sunday, a thanksgiving service will take place at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Kumasi to commemorate King Prempeh I’s historic return from exile. The service will celebrate the resilience of the Ashanti people and the enduring legacy of their heritage, upheld by the leadership of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The Manhyia Palace has underscored the non-political nature of the event, with Lawrence Prempeh emphasizing that attendees must refrain from wearing political party attire and should dress decently to respect the solemnity and cultural significance of the occasion.

King Prempeh I, also known as Nana Agyeman Prempeh I, was exiled by British colonial authorities in 1896. His return in 1924 symbolized the resilience of the Ashanti Kingdom and its people.

This weekend’s commemoration, led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will honor that historic legacy while celebrating the cultural and global ties of the Ashanti Kingdom, ensuring a memorable tribute to its rich heritage.
