Amenfi Central NDC MP drops independent candidacy bid ahead of 2024 elections

The Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, Peter Kwakye-Ackah, has officially withdrawn his independent bid for the 2024 elections.

In a statement announcing his decision, Mr. Kwakye-Ackah cited the recent ruling by the Sekondi High Court, which cleared National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Joana Cudjoe to contest in the December 7 elections.

“With just 18 days to the election, contesting as an independent candidate is no longer viable,” Mr. Kwakye-Ackah explained. He also expressed gratitude to party elders and leading members for their guidance, stating, “I would like to thank the Elders of the party and other leading members of the party for their invaluable counsel that has led to this decision in the supreme interest of the party.”

This development comes shortly after another former independent candidate, Dr. Karl Mark Arhin, also stepped down from the race. Dr. Arhin had earlier declared his candidacy to ensure the NDC remained represented in the election while Joana Cudjoe’s candidacy faced legal uncertainties. Speaking at a rally in Kyeikrom on November 16, alongside NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Dr. Arhin clarified that his independent bid was only a temporary measure.

At this time, it remains unclear whether Mr. Kwakye-Ackah will offer his full support to Madam Joana Cudjoe in the upcoming elections.
