AI Revolution in Education: A Call to Action from Professor Bawole of University of Ghana
Addressing the Second Biannual Conference of the Wiawso and Komenda Teacher Training Colleges at Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region, Professor Justice Nyigmah Bawole, the Dean of the University of Ghana Business School, highlighted the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of education.
“We must learn how to use AI effectively and guide our students in its appropriate application,” he stated
During his interaction with the media, Professor Bawole further exposed the multifaceted benefits of AI as a supportive tool for various stakeholders in the education sector. He underscored the need for caution in noting that AI functions based on the data it receives and lacks independent cognitive abilities. Despite this caution, he commended the Wiawso and Komenda Colleges for their recent transition to university status, aligning them with the broader responsibilities of higher education institutions.
The advancement of these colleges to universities signifies a significant step towards enhancing their teaching, research, and community engagement efforts. “Hosting a conference where tutors can present their work reflects the practices of universities, and I encourage them to continue this initiative,” he noted.
He urged other Colleges of Education in Ghana to follow suit and collaborate in advancing teacher education quality through initiatives like the one undertaken at the conference.
The central theme of the conference, “Enhancing Quality Teacher Education: The Role of Colleges in the 21st Century”, resonated with the collective goal of equipping educators with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively integrate digital tools, particularly AI, into their teaching methodologies.
By embracing technological advancements and collaborative efforts, colleges can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education and preparing students for the demands of the 21st-century workforce.
