AGI intensifies efforts to protect local mattress market from substandard imports
The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has announced steps to address the presence of foreign companies producing substandard mattresses in the local market. This move comes after local mattress manufacturers raised concerns that unfair trade practices were harming their businesses.
Seth Twum Akwaboah, Chief Executive of the AGI, stated that the association is ramping up efforts to shut down these foreign operations, citing public safety concerns.
“It’s just a packaging material. So, they just cut it like that and cover it and bring it to the market. They sell at cheaper price, therefore outcompeting the local marketers,” he explained.
Speaking at the AGI’s regional annual general meeting, Mr. Akwaboah noted an increasing number of unregistered foreign mattress companies operating across the country. He pointed out that these companies sell substandard products at lower prices, drawing customers away from local businesses and exposing buyers to potential health risks.
Market surveillance by the Ghana Standards Authority has uncovered many such companies operating in various parts of the country.
“So, the unsuspecting buyers are purchasing them and at the long run it can affect their health. After we closed down one shop, we realized that there are more of these companies on our markets,” he added.
The 25th regional AGM brought together businesses and other stakeholders from the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions. The meeting focused on addressing challenges facing local industries and exploring solutions for smoother operations. A regional job fair also took place, providing local businesses an opportunity to showcase their products and services.
