A luggage emitting smoke found and sent for investigations at the Kotoka International Airport.
In a statement released on Sunday, September 22, the Airport management addressed an alarming incident that took place at the Terminal 3 Departure Hall on the same day. At approximately 3:27 p.m., a passenger’s luggage was discovered emitting smoke, causing a stir among airport staff and travelers alike. The source of the smoke was traced to the baggage wrap area, prompting swift action from the Operations Room of the Aviation Security Department.
Following protocol, “The security team swiftly isolated the bag, and passengers in the terminal were evacuated as per the Ghana Airports Company Limited’s (GACL) Emergency Operations procedures,” the statement read. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and adherence to aviation safety regulations.
Authorities at the Kotoka International Airport have taken decisive steps in response to the incident. The passenger responsible for the luggage that posed a potential fire hazard has been handed over to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for further investigation. The swift and coordinated response by airport security personnel helped avert a potentially dangerous situation.
In light of this event, the GACL cautioned passengers “not to travel with batteries, as doing so violates International Civil Aviation Regulations. Luggage containing prohibited items, including batteries, will be confiscated, and the owner handed over to authorities.” Passengers are urged to comply with regulations to ensure a smooth and secure travel experience for all.
The cooperation of passengers in the departure hall during the clearing out is greatly appreciated by airport authorities. Ensuring passenger safety remains the top priority for the airport management, and the seamless resumption of terminal operations underscores their commitment to maintaining a secure environment for all travelers.
