Mahama’s vision: Governance reforms to rebuild trust with Ghanaians
President-elect John Dramani Mahama has emphasized that the outcome of the 2024 general elections reflects Ghanaians’ growing intolerance for poor governance, particularly the kind witnessed over the past eight years.
In his victory speech following his declaration as the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election, Mahama highlighted the immense responsibility bestowed upon him and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He acknowledged that the mandate comes with clear warnings against failing to meet the expectations of Ghanaians.
“My brothers and sisters, there is much to do to salvage our country and reset it. We have to start with the resetting of the relationship between citizens and elected officials. We must never forget that the people of Ghana have chosen us to represent their wishes and best interest,” Mahama said.
He also announced plans to initiate governance reforms and, where necessary, enforce severe measures to realign the nation with its aspirations. “We will be initiating important governance reforms and sometimes initiate severe measures in the next four years to reset our nation and bring it back on track as the black star of Africa,” he added.
Mahama further urged his supporters to moderate their celebrations, reminding them of the enormous task ahead. He stressed that the expectations of Ghanaians are high, and his government cannot afford to fail.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, officially declared John Dramani Mahama as the winner on Monday, December 9, 2024. Mahama secured 56.55% of total valid votes, with results from 267 constituencies.
Jean Mensa noted that results from nine constituencies remain outstanding due to disruptions caused by party supporters at collation centers. However, she clarified that even if all the votes in these constituencies went to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Mahama would still emerge victorious.
“I have the singular honour as the Returning Officer of the 2024 Presidential Election to declare His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election and the President-elect of the Republic of Ghana, with a total percentage of 56.55%. Congratulations, Sir. It is finished!” Jean Mensa announced.
