“The [Parliament] House will resume sitting after the elections…” – Speaker of Parliament

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has declined a request from the Majority Caucus to recall the House for an emergency session before the December elections. The request, outlined in a letter dated November 22, 2024, by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, suggested November 28 and 29 as potential dates to address urgent government business.

In a memo dated November 26, Bagbin made it clear that parliamentary activities would remain suspended until after the elections. “The House will resume sitting after the elections to complete all essential matters before a seamless transition to the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana,” he stated.

The Speaker urged lawmakers to uphold the national interest, stressing the need for honor, empathy, and humility in their duties. “The national interest would better be served if members exhibit conduct of honour, empathy, and humility in the performance of their duties. In the circumstances, I am neither inclined nor disposed to exercise my discretion in favour of your request. The request is accordingly declined,” Bagbin wrote.

Bagbin also reminded Afenyo-Markin of the parliamentary calendar, which factors in the election campaign season. He emphasized that this period is vital for government, political parties, and candidates to engage with the electorate.

“This season is for the government, parties, and both presidential and parliamentary candidates to present their manifestoes to the people and to account for the four-year term of office entrusted to them,” the Speaker noted.
