Newly commissioned Bank of Ghana’s towering headquarters Bank Square promises modernised goals

President Akufo-Addo has praised the newly commissioned Bank of Ghana (BoG) headquarters, “The Bank Square,” as a symbol of Ghana’s economic progress and stability. Speaking at the commissioning of the 22-storey edifice in Ridge, Accra, he highlighted its representation of the nation’s monetary and economic advancements.

“And as we stand here today, we are not only celebrating the physical structure of this imposing complex, we are also acknowledging the progress of our economy, which this edifice symbolizes,” he said. Citing BoG data, he noted Ghana’s recovery trajectory, with a 6.9% GDP growth in the second quarter of 2024 and inflation reducing from 54.1% in December 2022 to 22.1% in October 2024. “There is every indication that the downward trend of inflation will continue,” he added.

BoG Governor Dr. Ernest Addison described the headquarters as a modern civic landmark designed with sustainability and efficiency in mind. “Standing at 100 meters, it is not only the tallest building in Ghana but also the most sustainable EDGE Advanced structure in the sub-region,” he said. The solar-powered facility incorporates a currency museum, a 1,500-seat auditorium, and advanced office spaces for over 2,500 staff, demonstrating a commitment to modern banking and environmental consciousness.

Sandra Thompson, BoG Board Secretary, expressed gratitude to Dr. Addison and his deputies for the building, promising enhanced productivity. “We thank you for moving us from our 67-year-old cramped accommodation to this wonderful edifice,” she said.

Designed by Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, the headquarters affirms Ghana’s growing role in Africa’s financial ecosystem. Dr. Addison emphasized its significance, stating, “This state-of-the-art facility will foster creativity and collaboration, ensuring groundbreaking ideas for modern central banking.”
