5,000-capacity UPSA hostel named after Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has honored Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Running Mate for the 2024 elections, by naming a newly constructed hostel after him. The gesture recognizes his transformative contributions to education in Ghana.

The dedication ceremony, held on UPSA’s campus, celebrated Dr. Prempeh’s leadership as former Minister for Education, particularly his role in enhancing infrastructure at tertiary institutions.

In his remarks, Dr. Kofi Ohene Konadu, Chairman of the UPSA University Council, commended Dr. Prempeh for his invaluable support. “This hostel stands as a testament to his dedication to improving infrastructure for tertiary education,” Dr. Konadu said, emphasizing Dr. Prempeh’s role in securing funding and overseeing the construction of the state-of-the-art facility, now named The Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Hostel.

The hostel, which will accommodate over 5,000 students, is set to ease housing challenges on campus and provide an environment conducive to academic excellence. Dr. Konadu further highlighted the importance of visionary leadership in achieving such milestones. “Your support for this project was not just about funding but ensuring that tertiary institutions like UPSA could meet the growing demand for quality education,” he added.

Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, Vice Chancellor of UPSA, echoed these sentiments, praising Dr. Prempeh’s lasting impact on Ghana’s education. “Dr. Prempeh’s impact on Ghana’s education is indelible. From the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy to enhancing the infrastructure of institutions like ours, his leadership continues to transform lives. Naming this hostel after him is our way of immortalizing his contributions,” said Professor Amartey.

This recognition follows UPSA’s conferment of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree on Dr. Prempeh in July 2021, celebrating his dedication to advancing education in Ghana.

In his acceptance speech at the hostel-naming ceremony, Dr. Prempeh expressed his gratitude. “This honor is not just mine but for all who believe in the power of education to transform lives. I remain committed to supporting the growth of institutions like UPSA, which are pivotal to our national development,” he stated.

The event, attended by dignitaries, faculty members, students, and representatives from various educational bodies, marked a milestone in UPSA’s history, underscoring the institution’s commitment to recognizing leaders who champion the cause of education.
