GNASSM taskforce apprehends 5 illegal miners and sets abaze 40 Changfans at the Brim River
The Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) taskforce has arrested five individuals for engaging in illegal mining activities in the Birim River at Mampong, located in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region. This operation is part of the ongoing fight against galamsey, which continues to threaten the environment and water bodies.
As part of the operation, the taskforce destroyed 40 changfans, which are commonly used for illegal mining, and confiscated two newly constructed machines that were about to be deployed into the river.
Two of the suspects were apprehended while actively mining in the middle of the river. As the taskforce was leaving the site, they intercepted a truck carrying two newly built changfans to the same location. The truck’s occupants attempted to flee but were quickly apprehended after a brief chase.
The final arrest involved Nana Kwadwo Ayimadu, who claimed ownership of the changfans and attempted to block the taskforce from towing the truck.
According to GNASSM Treasurer Thomas Larbi, who led the operation, the association remains dedicated to eliminating illegal mining operations that continue to pollute the country’s water bodies. He confirmed that the arrested individuals, along with the seized equipment, have been handed over to the Kibi District Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.
