Some members of the Small-Scale Miners Association launch attacks on illegal mining operators

A group of small-scale miners has taken decisive action, launching attacks on illegal mining operators across the country. According to these miners, illegal mining activities have undermined the legal mining industry, raising concerns that must be addressed by all stakeholders.

This move aligns with the government’s efforts to combat illicit mining, an activity that has been blamed for widespread environmental destruction and significant loss of national revenue. The small-scale miners have targeted illegal mining sites in the Ashanti and Western regions, using their own resources to dismantle equipment and disrupt the operations of illegal miners.

The initiative was highlighted during a meeting in the Amansie West District, where the Advocacy for Sustainable Mining group gathered with zonal members to raise awareness about the importance of responsible mining practices.

Mr. Joseph Mensah, the Zonal Chairman of the Small-Scale Miners Association in Amansie West, called on the government to maintain its confidence in the association as a key ally in the fight against “galamsey” (illegal mining). He noted that the group has formed a task force to specifically target illegal miners, particularly those operating on water bodies and in forest reserves.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Mr. Mensah expressed concerns about the damaging impact of illegal mining on their legitimate businesses. “Illegal miners are making our work unpopular and difficult, so they must be dealt with without any mercy for them,” said Amankwa Anthony, one of the miners.

While the group is committed to tackling illegal mining, they disagree with calls from some Ghanaians for a total ban on small-scale mining, arguing that such a move would not solve the problem.
