Akufo-Addo’s daughters are not linked to illegal mining – Ministry of Lands refutes MP’s accusations
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has refuted the accusations made by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, against President Akufo-Addo’s daughters regarding their alleged involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. The Ministry emphasized that these allegations are baseless and intentionally misleading, designed to tarnish the reputation of the President’s family. It was made clear in a statement released on Saturday, September 28, 2024, that there is no verifiable connection between the President’s daughters and any illicit mining activities.
Moreover, the Ministry highlighted that the Elite Minerals Company Limited, which was implicated by Ablakwa, had been legally registered back in 2008 and obtained a legitimate mining lease in the Kwaebibirem Municipality in 2012, during the administration of John Mahama. This factual timeline effectively debunks any insinuation of current involvement by the President’s family in illegal mining operations. The government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating illegal mining practices was underscored, with a firm stance that all individuals, regardless of their affiliations, would be subject to the full force of the law.
“The attention of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has been drawn to certain comments by the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, alleging that the daughters of the President of the Republic, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, are either associated with a certain company and/or involved in illegal mining.”
“The said allegations are palpably false and without merit whatsoever,” the statement said. The government’s continuous efforts to restore lands impacted by galamsey and safeguard the nation’s precious natural resources were emphasized as ongoing priorities.
