Ghana’s mortuary workers to launch indefinite strike and shut services nationwide
The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has taken a decisive stance by announcing the closure of all mortuaries nationwide, effective from Thursday, September 26, 2024. This action stems from the workers’ adamant decision to initiate an indefinite strike in response to unresolved grievances with their employer; the government. The primary bone of contention revolves around the employer’s consistent failure to address the long-standing demands put forth by the diligent mortuary workers.
One of the demands highlighted by MOWAG is the pressing need for the provision of adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure the safety and well-being of the workers. This demand is underscored by the inherent risks associated with handling deceased individuals, necessitating strict safety measures to avoid potential health hazards. Furthermore, the workers are demanding for the prompt payment of salary arrears dating back to 2020, a critical financial concern that has been lingering unresolved for a considerable period.
In addition to these pressing issues, MOWAG is also pushing for the allocation of financial clearance to facilitate the recruitment of 500 additional mortuary workers. The shortage of manpower in this essential sector has placed undue strain on existing workers, compromising the efficiency and quality of mortuary services provided. Moreover, the demand for the payment of the COVID-19 bonus pledged to mortuary workers by the President underscores the workers’ rightful claim to fair compensation for their dedicated service during challenging times.
The decision to embark on a strike was not taken lightly by the workers, as it reflects their frustration with the perceived lack of action from the authorities in addressing their concerns. MOWAG has raised serious alarm regarding the alarming rate of deaths among mortuary workers, attributing this tragic trend to the deplorable working conditions that have persisted without remedy. Urgent intervention is essential in safeguarding the health and well-being of these essential workers who play a crucial role in handling deceased individuals with dignity and respect.
In a firm tone, MOWAG has made it very clear that no further negotiations or deliberations will take place until their demands are satisfactorily met. The directive for all members to close mortuaries and refrain from work underscores the determination of the workers to uphold their rights and request for overdue reforms in the sector.
